Police make daring arrest of auto theft suspect found hiding in dumpster

Salt Lake City, UT – The Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) arrested a man who was found hiding in a dumpster after an alleged auto theft. The incident occurred on Wednesday, July 21, 2021, in the area of 500 South and 300 East.

According to the SLCPD, officers responded to a report of a stolen vehicle in the area. The officers located the stolen vehicle and began to pursue it. The suspect, later identified as 27-year-old Michael Martinez, abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.

The SLCPD set up a perimeter and began to search for Martinez. During the search, officers found Martinez hiding in a dumpster. He was taken into custody without incident.

Martinez was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on charges of theft of a motor vehicle, fleeing from police, and possession of drug paraphernalia. The SLCPD is continuing to investigate the incident.

The SLCPD reminds residents to always lock their vehicles and remove any valuables from plain sight. They also encourage residents to report any suspicious activity in their neighborhoods.
