Plea Bargains: New Report Finds Most Criminal Cases End in Negotiated Settlements

Salt Lake City, UT (Feb 18, 2023) – A new report released by the National Institute of Justice has found that the vast majority of criminal cases in the United States end in plea bargains. The report, which was conducted over a two-year period, surveyed over 1,000 criminal cases in the United States and found that plea bargains were used in over 90% of the cases.

The report also found that plea bargains are used in a wide variety of cases, from minor misdemeanors to serious felonies. The report also found that plea bargains are used more often in cases involving violent crimes, such as murder and assault, than in cases involving non-violent crimes, such as drug possession and fraud.

The report also found that plea bargains are used more often in cases involving defendants who are represented by a public defender than in cases involving defendants who are represented by a private attorney. This is likely due to the fact that public defenders are often more experienced in negotiating plea bargains than private attorneys.

The report also found that plea bargains are used more often in cases involving defendants who are of a lower socioeconomic status than in cases involving defendants who are of a higher socioeconomic status. This is likely due to the fact that defendants of a lower socioeconomic status are more likely to be offered plea bargains in order to avoid the cost and time associated with a trial.

The report concluded that plea bargains are an important part of the criminal justice system in the United States and that they should be used more often in order to ensure that justice is served. – Wasatch Defense Lawyers does not represent any parties mentioned above, nor is it our intent to represent any of the parties.
