Salt Lake City, Utah

Salt Lake City, Utah

“Salt Lake City, Utah”, often abbreviated as Salt Lake or SLC, is the capital and the most populous city in the state of Utah. With a metropolitan area population of over 1.1 million as of 2013, Salt Lake City lies at the core of a larger urban region known as the Salt Lake City-Provo-Ogden, UT Combined Statistical Area. The city is one of only two major urban areas in the Great Basin and the largest in the Intermountain West.

Salt Lake City was established in 1847 by Brigham Young and other followers of Mormonism, who transformed the arid valley through extensive irrigation and cultivation. Originally named “Great Salt Lake City” due to its proximity to the Great Salt Lake, the word “great” was officially dropped from the name in 1868.

Although Salt Lake City continues to house the headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), less than half of its population are members of the LDS Church today. The city’s initial economic growth was spurred by immigration of international LDS members, mining booms, and the construction of the first transcontinental railroad, earning it the nickname “Crossroads of the West”.

Salt Lake City, traversed by the first transcontinental highway, the Lincoln Highway, in 1913 and currently intersected by two major cross-country freeways, I-15 and I-80, has since evolved a robust outdoor recreation tourist industry, primarily centered on skiing, and was the proud host of the 2002 Winter Olympics. It is also recognized as the industrial banking center of the United States.
